Abstract
As an intermediary institution, banks, as well as foreign-owned banks, are expected to take part as agent of development. Since the government liberalized the financial sectors and gave the opportunity to foreign investors to participate in the Indonesian banking industry, foreign-owned banks have never fulfilled the objective to support the Indonesian economic growth. In recent years, they focus more on facilitating public consumption rather than supporting the economically productive sectors. Due to this condition, the role of foreign-owned banks in the Indonesian economy must be re-evaluated and an effective strategy should be formulated to enforce them to be actively involved in the more productive sectors in order to support the national economic growth.
